Why the low end matters more than the peak
Product listings compete on the top of the range. Maximum power, strongest setting, most intense mode. It is an easy thing to advertise because it is a single number that gets bigger.
It is also, for most people, the wrong end of the range to evaluate.
The common failure is too much, not too little
The glans clitoris is densely innervated — the anatomy article covers the nerve distribution in detail. For a region that sensitive, the practical problem is more often that a device's lowest setting is already past comfortable than that its highest is insufficient.
A device with a strong floor gives you no usable range at all. You are choosing between "too much" and "off." A device with a genuinely low floor gives you the whole range, including the top.
This is why "number of intensity levels" is a more useful figure than "maximum intensity" — but only if you know how those levels are distributed.

Levels are not evenly spaced
Eight intensity levels sounds like eight usable options. Often it is not.
Motor response is not linear with input power. Many devices cluster their perceptible differences in the middle of the range: the first two settings feel similar, the top two feel similar, and the real variation lives between them. On some designs the lowest setting is well above zero because the motor will not turn reliably below a certain threshold.
What you actually want to know is whether setting one is gentle. That is a single question, and it is not answerable from a specification. It is answerable from reviews, if you read them for the right thing — look for people describing the low end rather than praising the high end.
A related point: a device with fewer, well-spaced levels is often more usable than one with twenty levels clustered into three distinguishable sensations. More is not the same as finer.
Frequency and amplitude are different things
Two devices at the same nominal intensity can feel completely different, because "intensity" bundles two independent variables.
Frequency is how fast the motor oscillates. Higher frequency reads as buzzy and surface-level; lower frequency reads as deep and rumbly.
Amplitude is how far it moves. Larger amplitude reads as more powerful regardless of frequency.
A high-frequency, low-amplitude motor produces a buzzy sensation that many people find numbing over time — it is also, not coincidentally, the cheapest motor type to build. A low-frequency, high-amplitude motor produces a deeper sensation that tends to stay perceptible for longer.
Almost no consumer listing states either figure. The proxies available to you: motor descriptions mentioning "rumbly" or "deep" versus "buzzy," and the physical size of the motor housing, since amplitude generally requires more space.
Contact area changes more than power does
This is probably the single most underrated variable.
The same power delivered through a broad, flat surface and through a narrow tip produce substantially different sensations. Broad contact spreads the energy and reads as diffuse and warm; narrow contact concentrates it and reads as sharp and specific.
If you are comparing two products and one is broad and one is pointed, that difference will matter more to your experience than a gap in maximum power. It is also rarely presented as a specification — you are reading it off the photographs.

Patterns are usually oversold
Most devices ship with a list of vibration patterns — pulse, wave, escalate, and a number of variations. Listings count them as features.
In practice, most people settle on one or two steady settings. Patterns interrupt the accumulation of sensation, which is sometimes what you want and often is not. A device with three patterns you use is not worse than one with twenty you do not.
Two things do make patterns worth having:
- A ramp or escalation mode, which increases intensity gradually rather than in steps. This is genuinely useful for a sensitive area.
- A gentle pulse at low intensity, which reads as less numbing than continuous stimulation at the same level over a long session.
Everything beyond that is inventory.
The controls matter as much as the settings
A device you cannot adjust without looking at it is a device you will use at one setting.
- Can you find the buttons by touch? Raised, distinct, differently-shaped controls are usable in the dark. A flush touch panel is not.
- Can you go down as well as up? Some designs cycle through every setting to return to the beginning, which means reducing intensity requires passing through the maximum. This is a genuinely bad design and it is common.
- Is there a fast off? A press-and-hold that stops everything, rather than cycling to the end.
- Does it remember or reset? A device that starts at the last setting used can be startling. Starting at the lowest is safer.
None of these appear in a specification table. All of them affect whether the intensity range is actually accessible.
What to compare, in order
If you are choosing between two products:
1. Is the lowest setting genuinely low? Reviews, not specifications.
2. Broad or focused contact? Photographs.
3. Deep or buzzy? Reviews describing the character.
4. Can you reduce intensity easily? Manual or reviews.
5. How quiet at the setting you would actually use? See how to read a noise specification.
6. Peak power.
Peak power is last on the list deliberately. It is the number that gets advertised and the one least likely to determine whether you are satisfied.
FAQ
Is a more powerful device better?
Only if you need the top of the range, and most people spend most of their time well below it. A wide usable range is more valuable than a high ceiling.
What does "rumbly" actually mean?
Lower-frequency, higher-amplitude vibration. It reads as deeper and tends to remain perceptible for longer, where high-frequency buzz can start to feel numbing. It generally requires a larger motor, which is why very slim devices are more often buzzy.
Will using the highest setting reduce my sensitivity?
Temporarily, sometimes — sensory adaptation during sustained intense stimulation is normal and resolves. There is no good evidence for lasting desensitisation from ordinary use. What "desensitization" actually means covers the mechanism.
Are more intensity levels better?
Only if they are distinguishable. Twenty levels clustered into three perceptible sensations is worse than six well-spaced ones.
